Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not just his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
