Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
