Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the way of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
