Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.
British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."
In December, the US military conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
